Kotozakura starting to look like his old self again, glad to see it. Props to you Tim for GIFing his war face -- iconic.

Everytime he does that I'm reminded of something my aunt says... "looking like he had a fart caught cross-wised".

I like watching Takayasu's face in the slow-mo replays on NHK Channel. This time you could almost see the instant he got the idea to change tactics on Aonishki -- you could see his expression change.

The look Roga gave Midorifuji after that finish made me laugh.

It's funny how in sumo, since we are so starved for emotion/expression, those little moments can really stand out. Ura's face after the Takanosho bout is still stuck in my head.

Justa correction for the leaderboard. Aoinishiki is 4-2 not 5-1 since he lost to Onosato.

Got it! Thanks for reading and stopping by. Got a prediction on Aonishiki's final record for this basho?

Takeru 100% tore his bicep, it balled up super clearly as he stood up beside the dojo, gross and unfortunate for him, really.

It feels like you could see the bruising begin immediately. Must have hurt so much.

Yep, looked very bad. I’ve torn my right biceps, my left pec, and dislocated my left wrist — and the biceps was by far the most annoying functionally to rehab. That guy is so explosive and so brittle, like a lot of top NFL rookies who flame out after dominant combines and ROY campaigns

Adding to how much this sucks is the fact he's going to be competing when this is maybe 75% healed because... sumo.

Really hoping that one day they’ll lay out a sensible injury program for everyone, but they won’t because…sumo. We might have gotten a few more years out of guys like Takakeisho if so

Hakuho had talked about bringing more modern sports science into sumo. There's an alternate timeline somewhere where he wins his battle with the JSA, becomes chairman and sumo steps boldy into the modern world (for the things that count).

I really believe it could become a world game. It’s incredibly easy to digest, the guys offer great visuals, and despite its easy exterior it’s super complicated. Then again, I do a piece every year where I lay out why Canadian football is more fun and more explosive and…crickets (but it is! Plus it’s on now too!)

Well now I need to read that to convince myself to go watch the Ti-Cats sometime.

Kayo was holding his own this time until once again he started sidestepping and backpedaling. Dude needs a dose of self-confidence.

Same with Shodai. He never fights well in reverse. He was an ozeki when I started watching sumo, and his downward slide has been hard to watch. Rather see guys go out at their peak, like Takakeisho and Terunofuji.

Man, Takayasu's fingertips were so close to the sand, the judge did a double-take. What a move he made then on Aonishki!

About Takerofuji, I thought "torn bicep" as well. He didn't even do the usual three-chop wave with that arm on accepting his winnings, it was hurting that bad. Let's hope he just pulled a muscle.

I have to say, if I was a judge in a lockup like that one between Meisei and Hakuoho I would have a hard time resisting the urge to use my paddle on a bare buttock -- a quick spank to get things moving! ;-D

My hope was a dislocated shoulder for Takerufuji, which could just be popped in. But seeing the bicep turn purple means this is probably vwry serious, sadly.

Pretty sure the JSA frown on spanking.
