Kirishima is like: "If I had a nickel everytime I won a yusho because Kotozakura eliminated my rival, I'll have two nickels but strange it happened twice."

I dunno, I was also puzzled by Kirishima letting Aonishki go low, but this could be the perfect ending. Kiri takes the cup. Ao, though humbled, still has a chance to get a K and redeem himself.

I think Kirishima owes both Kotozakura and Horshoryu a beer. There was no dive taken in their bout, but I think I saw a smile on Horsh's face, knowing that his frenemy Kiri would get the cup. Frankly, I hope Ao wins tomorrow and gets his K, but put up a fight, Horsh!

Agree that Papa Yasu crashed and burned this second week. Hope he's not hurt.

Am rooting for Takerufuji to get his K down in juryo and climbs back into the top ranks. NHK channel doesn't cover juryo, Tim, so I'm depending on you for news.

Was afraid my boy Wakatakakage would pull out. He was holding that arm bad yesterday. Tim, any news on how bad?

Also, I love the count-keeping at the end of your posts. How many degrees does Ura have to roll to count as a flip?

The only news I've seen on WTK is six weeks rest. I don't think this is something that will keep him out of a tournament, but it might be something that bothers him once the tournament starts.

A flip, for me, has to be total forwards rotation landing on the butt or legs.

LOL! Glad to have the technical definition. This is an important topic and we must have no gray areas!

Good news about Waka.

yep, excellent to get that properly defined!

love the technical question as to what constitutes an ura flip :-)

my suggestion for bonus gif for senshuraku is the guy on the left of the crowd solemnly singing the japanese anthem while wearing some fan gear around his face that looks like a number of unevenly sized red plastic balls. (i don't have a time stamp because the NHK feed hasn't been uploaded to youtube yet. will add one if i find it!)

Nice, keep my posted!

sorry, time difference didn't work out. but for anyone who just wants to see it, go to https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/live_tv/ and select "Day 15

GRAND SUMO LIVE" and you'll see the guy at 1:10:57 on the left of your screen.

Small correction: I believe this is Aonishiki's second tournament as ozeki, not his first. I really liked a bunch of the bouts today, as it still showed some wrestlers digging deep and using their strengths (Aonishiki, Kotozakura) to take advantage of their opponents' strategic errors.

Also, shame for Fujiryoga going make-koshi, but I am cheering for Fujinokawa and Fujiseiun.

Ah, yes, of course. Thanks for catching that. What is it about the Fujis that you like?

mklip2001's avatar

Mostly that they were debut makuuchi fighters, but Fujinokawa is special in his bullheaded pursuit of fights. Fujiryoga is also pathologically aggressive with the slick hair that isn't in a chonmage. And Fujiseiun got super high rank for a debut guy and still pulled off a comfortable winning record. The fact these guys are named Fuji is more of a coincidence... I appreciate Atamifuji but do not love his fight style as much. (Yoshinofuji is still pretty fun even if he struggles a bit.)

I never noticed the Fuji connection, but now that you mention it I can't unsee it.

That said, I am a huge Atamifuji fan, just as I was a Takakeisho fan in his day. I love the little guys as underdogs, and the big spherical guys as the very essence of sumo.
