Right before the basho, I guessed Kirishima as my main choice to win. Fingers crossed. It would have been fun for Papa Bear to finally get a yusho, and he started so well, but he has just gotten a bit outdone in some tough matches. (He is still fighting well despite the losses.)
It varies from person to person. Sometimes you see guys switch half way through a tournament, sometimes they do it if they feel like they need to turn over a new leaf, sometimes they have a rotation that they will just switch through occasionally.
i guess i just felt like it usually gets remarked on by the commentators but nobody said anything. i like the new colour, the old one was very brown. he seems to have had the old one for a while, though. i'll keep an eye on it.
Well Monday 16th was quite the day! Aonishiki has at last figured out what was going wrong and why! And he’s obviously left it a bit late in the day to decide to start winning, but at least Mr insufferable looked up, muttered something and then went back to his you tube variety of entertainment.
Like Tim I absolutely hate the utchari , if you look at the one Ura did , then yes at the time it does seem exciting and I was excited watching Ura do it, but then I realised how extremely dangerous it is. Ura is highly athletic and proficient in this move but if Danny you can find the clip of him performing that move and he is highly proficient you will see exactly how extremely dangerous it is , then imagine and watch some of the other less proficient in this move doing it and what can go wrong very very quickly
So Ura flipped his opponent over onto his back and slammed down onto his stomach, but Uras back was what was landing onto his opponent, if the opponent had still been holding both Uras arms as he arched his back then a broken back would have been the least of his worries , following that this move was then done several more times by far less experienced Rikishi and everyone here would agree it was probably one of the most terrifying things to see !
also, did not have fujinokawa beating atamifuji (of all people) by oshidashi on my bingo card! he's so much fun to watch.
hard to figure out what could possibly be going on with aonishiki, he still doesn't look injured and looked back to his old self today. will be interesting to see if anything comes out after the basho.
I think it's a case of everyone catching up to Aonishiki and now he's in a bit of a mental funk over it. I think he'll get back to winning soon enough and that he might have some new moves to show us when he does.
given that apparently he was too stressed out to sleep over the last few days of the last basho, it might also be due to the extreme pressure he put himself under. (also, with family and friends in ukraine, you never know what else might be going on. i know his parents are in germany but he's surely got other loved ones who are still in ukraine.)
i do think he's got all the tools to get over it and will be the stronger for this experience but it's hard watching him like this.
Another great report Tim. Have I missed something here though: what is loathsome about an utchari, whether done by pink or black? It all adds to the kimirate spice blend.
I just hate it because it's so dangerous. In January we saw a handful of them/attempts at them. I'm just worried that someone is going to break their neck or skull after one of these at some point.
yeah, if you look at hiradoumi tumbling off the dohyo, it seems like a bit closer to the actual edge with his neck and that could have been very very ugly. i mean i guess their necks are as padded (and muscular) as can be but there's also a lot of weight in the air.
Yeah, I also don't like how the thrower often drops straight back off the dohyo. I'm terrified someone is going to crack the back of their skull on the floor.

Takayasu is always a tough out. We've seen quite often, though, that he comes out the gates hot and then cools down the longer we go.
And, obviously, I'm delighted to see Kirishima doing so well.
btw the commentator didn't mention it but shishi changed his mawashi colour! anyone know anything about that?

Definitely not a fan of the brown mawashi, even if the GOAT Hakuho sported one for a while.
death, taxes and wakamotoharu pulling an utchari

yeah, definitely looks super dangerous for both guys. i hate it. it can look amazing but ugh.
