Well guys what’s going on? Onosato looked like he’d been hit by a brick yesterday, he looked in pain and he just got put out like the cat

I imagine all four top tier felt terrible being put out in front of the Royal family!

I was extremely disappointed with Hoshoryu, Daieisho has been extremely aggressive this tournament and Hoshoryu just expected to win, it just was very bad , in fact I would go as far as saying completely complacent going into the bout, I feel furious with Hoshoryu right now , he doesn’t deserve his position right now in my eyes.

Aonishiki just didn’t attend the bout Kirishima is no one to underestimate, he’s a proper hard nut, I feel he was completely underestimated by Aonishiki, Kirishima obviously did his homework, made sure Aonishiki was kept upright and that’s what won the bout

Kotozakura has looked really good this tournament, so it’s not clear to me why he’s going downhill?

Boring though this is it all comes back to the moves, they seem to have all slid back into familiar positions slap downs and frontal push out thrusts

Kirishima and Abi [ not keen on Abi ] but they do both deserve these wins no two ways about it they have come in and rocked the circuit

We have a lot of 6-2 going into week 2 [ day 9] and well you know where I am going children ATAMIFUJI he’s doing good, okay bit of over exaggeration there but I think he can get to ten this week

Now don’t laugh at me !! I am praying so hard for him, he works so hard at training, he knows he’s not the best in the dohyo but he makes up for it in training

Please everyone put in a good word for him this week !!

ATAMIFUJI indeed. There are three Isegahama guys in the joi and suspected all would have good tournaments, since they get to avoid each other and share intel. But I thought Yoshinofuji would be the shining star among them. Looks like I'm wrong about that and Atami-pudding might lead the way for the former Terunofuji this month.

Well by now, you will be in the know, and we now know that Atamifuji won his bout over Onosato, whom I was surprised to see today! Terunofuji must be doing exulted cartwheels, not one but two wins over Yokozunas !!

What a crazy day! When Aonishiki dropped his bout I thought, "Well, that's it for him..." then *both* Yokuzuna lost :-D Gonna be an exciting week.

This basho is so wide open. It's a little like Nagoya last year, when Kotoshoho came through the pack. But there's even more contenders in the running and more big names, too.

I recently saw a streamer I follow commenting on sumo, and I had no idea he knew anything about it. He was wondering whether he would get thrown out of the arena if he showed up to his seat with a Hoshoryu 3:16 sign ;)

That's an excellent idea for a t-shirt...

Daieisho was a pretty shocking candidate for such a tactical shift. I've often bemoaned about how predictable and one-dimensional he is. I suppose that all helped him trick Hoshoryu in that one moment, though.

And it's true, a lot of wrestlers are faithful to their style of sumo to the extreme. And you often see them just doing the same thing every time even if it's only successful half the time (or less). They remind me of when I used to interview MMA fighters a lot. The fighters would so often say, "I didn't do anything different in training for this opponent, I just do what I'm good at and they have to adjust to me." Now, the best fighters did adjust in training and fighting. And I think you can see that with some of the best rikishi, too. Kotozakura has long been someone I've admired for how he adjusts to the opponent and takes into account his past meetings with them.
