Great post, I think you'll be mostly right. One exception - I think Takayasu will make a big (last?) push for the yusho and maybe even get it. LET'S GOO!
Also, I look forward to see Fujinokawa meet the higher ranks a lot, it will be a daily highlight. He's got perhaps the most dog in him in the entire world. Hosh kinboshi incoming?
Thanks Dave. Yeah, that's terrible news about Midorifuji. It's always hard to tell the severity regarding injuries. I feel a lot gets lost in translation with these things. The straight up translations are saying "heart failure", but that surely can't be right.
Hi Tim, well this morning Basho got off to a marvellous start
On the sad Subject of Midorifuji, I think we will see retirement, these heart problems are not to be trifled with, I like you , really like him, but not so much he possibly tries to go on and kill’s himself.
I did say marvellous for some, but not others
I feel Hakunofuji should probably sit this one out, he suffered severe pain in his left foot and had to be helped off by aids, also helped off Onokatsu who looked in dire agony on falling , causing Ichiyamamoto to show some concern 🙁
I feel Wakatakakage is at last woken up, and he definitely wanted the day one win , which he executed beautifully, he had a definite look of disliking Onosato, and our Yokozuna looked stunned, since Waka performance of late has been extremely poor! Perhaps that meant Onosato completely underestimated Waka ? Plus I don’t think Onosato is 100% with the shoulder.
I reckon we have three definite Rikishi now pushing for Ozeki, Kirishima, but doesn’t he need 22 ? Wakatakakage and of course Takayasu not sure what they need now to make this happen, hopefully Tim you can guide me on these points?
I feel like Kotokazura will get 8-10 he just doesn’t come across as particularly bothered !!
Aonishiki put the other Waka out, but I would say it was a bit of a fight, it definitely wasn’t a wham bam thank you Man , he had to work for that win.
Now Mr Insufferable says Aonishiki for back to back win, and he says this is exactly replica of day one in January.
Now you all know where I am heading now
Hoshoryu V Atamifuji
Yokozuna just had to get his pride back, after the January loss to Atamifuji
And so he he did, but at one point Atamifuji did very nearly have Hoshoryu out, but it felt like Hoshoryu had done a bit of back bout watching on reruns because he in the end won , but it wasn’t a pushover and I would have to say he looked relieved 🥲 I am glad he took the bout seriously and respected Atami
On some of the other comments sites, a lot of people were saying even Atamifuji beat him, so I think this was a strictly pride thing!
I agree with you Tim re: Atami I think 8-10 at a stretch, I do so desperately want to see him rise, possibly Komosubi isn’t going to be his lasting post , I hate sounding negative but feel he needs to keep that non loosing record to keep him Komosubi I am not confident enough that he can do it.
I agree, I do like Kirishima and I do hope he makes it to Ozeki.
I don’t want to jinx Hoshoryu so won’t say anything, but Day 1 Atamifuji V H it was terrible I didn’t know who to support lol
Mr insufferable says cash on Aonishiki again, he exudes Authority,
I do agree he does have that air of Authority, Onosato and Hoshoryu just don’t.
Let’s not underestimate Atamifuji, you’re probably right, sekiwake, but I dream he will get to Ozeki !
I personally think the winner is open right now, I do like Takayasu he’s doing great. I think we have three real prospects trying to get to Ozeki Takayasu, Kirishima, and of course Wakatakakage
i'd love to see aonishiki take it, though i think you're right, if onosato is healthier than last time round, he might just win it. will be interesting to see if aonishiki can beat him this time.
First of all, that gif at the top is hilarious. Those are maybe the only two wrestlers who can be recognized from directly above!
That said, I don't see Kotozakura, Takayasu or even Wakamotoharu suffering make-koshis, even if they get out of it just by 1 win (going 8-7). If Wakatakakage and Ura can get kashi-koshi, so can they.
I think Shodai is low enough in the rankings that he should be able to beat up 8 guys. And if Shishi shows the same kind of improvement he did in January, that M11e rank is going to be in his favor. Kashi-koshis for both.

A Takayusho would be outstanding.
So much dog in Fujinokawa. I hope he's able to keep it up, even if he gets a bit of a beating this month.
one of the NHK reporters picked takayasu as well!
and yeah, can't wait to see how fujinokawa does, he's so much fun to watch! never leaves anything in the ring.
Man, I'd love to see Papa Taka take a run at the cup! He's been a bridesmaid so many times, never a bride!
My heart breaks for Midorifuji, my first favorite rikishi. Hope he recovers soon and doesn't have any long term effects from this situation.
Great post, Tim - I always love reading your predictions. Let's go Kirishima!

Hi, good to hear from you!
Kirishima needs 11 wins in this tournament to get ozeki. He's my fave, so I hope he gets it.
I think Atamifuji reaches sekiwake, at least, in his career. I'd be very surprised if he doesn't snag at least one yusho, too.
I agree, I do like Kirishima and I do hope he makes it to Ozeki.

Those two are going to share a lot of cups over the next decade. Hopefully Hoshoryu is able to squeeze between them and grab a couple, too.
certainly doing the best out of the three so far. early days but hey

Hey man, great predictions. It's funny how Shishi has kinda won everyone over, eh?
